5 x Asparagus Pacific Purple Bare Root
The newest purple hybrid variety is considered the sweetest on the market by many and certainly sweeter than any of the green asparagus varieties. The low fibre content means the spears are particularly tender even when eaten raw, all the way to the base of the spear. This makes them not just excellent once cooked, but also a very attractive and tasty addition to salads. A previous criticism of purple varieties was there poor yields, however, this purple variety has also shown that it can produce higher yields than most green varieties,.
Asparagus is suitable for Spring planting – try to avoid the last heavy frost. Raised beds are not necessary they can be planted into borders or traditional beds. Avoid planting the asparagus on the site of old asparagus beds as this may cause problems with disease. Choose an area that is frost pocket free and if soil is particularly heavy, then you may need to consider creating a raised bed. Ground must be kept weed free before planting and through to cultivation for best results.
